Why Do We Need a Housing Plan

Everyone should have the same choices and options about housing

People with a Learning Disability in Northamptonshire  should have these choices too

We think people  need better information about housing and where to get help

Learn where to go for advice and  learn more about different types of housing

In Northamptonshire, Social Services know about 1100 people with a Learning Disability. 

About 450 people are living in a residential care home

About 400 people live at home with their family and another 250 mostly rent a property but some own their own home

We don’t know if the people living at home or in a care home know about the other choices available

Some people want a bigger choice about where and how to live

People are confused about who can help give advice and information

Some people are not confident and worry about moving home

Some people worry about living somewhere they don’t want to be

By creating a Housing Plan we can help people to:

Be better informed

Have more options about how they live

Learn about different ways of getting support

Help people feel in control

Help people choose where they want to live

Steps to Making this Housing Plan

We need to learn about what people want, where they want to live and what support they would like

We need to share ways of making these things happen

We will look at who can help us to do this

Support each other

Decide how to make the plan happen

Check its working and add to it over time

What has already Happened

We have someone to help people get involved and support everyone who joins in

Her name is Marion Turner and she is the Project Co-Ordinator

We have this website to help you join in and learn about whats happening

Lots of people are learning about this project

We have contacted many organisations

talked to some people in a meeting

We have planned some more meetings for people to join in and help decide how we will create the plan

Things we need to do

Agree some things about the Housing Plan

Decide on the work to do who will help do it

Decide on ways to help people feel valued

Get more people with a Learning Disability involved in making the plan

Learn about all the different types of housing

Other Housing Plans

The Government says every District and Borough Council have to create a housing plan and a homeless prevention strategy

They are responsible for helping people to meet their housing needs

The District & Borough Councils in Northamptonshire are :-

Corby District Council

Kettering Borough Council

Daventry District Council

East Northants District Council

Northampton Borough Council

Wellingborough Borough Council

South Northants District Council

The Learning Disability Housing Plan will be part of these plans to make sure that everyone has a home and can live where they want to in Northamptonshire
